Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before your Mauritanian adventure

Yes, most travelers need a visa to enter Mauritania. The good news is that you can apply for an e-visa online through the official Mauritanian government portal. The process is straightforward and typically takes 2–3 business days. If you'd prefer a hassle-free experience, our team at Mauritania Beyond can handle the entire visa application for you — just reach out and we'll take care of it.

You can apply for a Mauritanian e-visa at the official portal. You'll need a valid passport (6+ months validity), a recent photo, your travel itinerary, and a hotel booking or invitation letter. The fee varies by nationality. Prefer to skip the paperwork? Contact us and we'll process your visa application on your behalf.

Yes — the tourist areas of Mauritania are generally safe. Our guided tours operate in well-traveled regions including the Adrar, the Atlantic coast, and the ancient cities of Chinguetti and Ouadane. We provide experienced local guides, reliable transportation, and 24/7 support throughout your trip.

The best time to visit is between October and April, when daytime temperatures are pleasant (20–30°C) and nights are cool in the desert. Summer months (May–September) can be extremely hot, especially in the Sahara where temperatures exceed 45°C.

Nouakchott–Oumtounsy International Airport (NKC) is the main gateway, with direct flights from Paris, Istanbul, Casablanca, Tunis, and several West African cities. You can also enter overland from Morocco via the Western Sahara border crossing at Guerguerat.

The Mauritanian Ouguiya (MRU) is the local currency. Credit cards are accepted in some hotels in Nouakchott, but cash is essential everywhere else. We recommend exchanging money upon arrival — our guides can help you find the best rates.

Absolutely! The Iron Ore Train is one of our most popular experiences. You'll ride in open ore wagons from Zouerate to Nouadhibou (or vice versa) across 700+ km of Saharan landscape. It's a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that we arrange as part of several of our tour packages.
